This past weekend, I took the outdoor bench that my folks gave me and did some quick palm sanding, stained it and a coated it with polyurethane. I may have made a mistake with the stain = the wood was so porous and dry that it soaked it up quickly making it impossible to control the color... drank it right up! In retrospect, probably should have stuck with the sanding and poly only. Oops.
What I may do is take some of my decking scraps and see if I can't refurb the bench into a "lifetime" bench. That would be awesome - the current wood (oak) is a little splintery which is not a good quality for a bench. While apart, I could give the heavy metal pieces a sanding and repaint - starting to flake and rust a little.
Maybe this would be a good wintertime project that I can complete in time for next spring. I'll bring it into the basement this winter and see what I can do.
Here's the before... looks pretty good.... looking closer, it is very dry and has splinters.
Here's the after... very dark and botchy. However, the surface is smoother and nicer - so somewhat improved functionality.

You ruined it.
At least you're honest about it.
Kidding.
I think that wood was Brizilian Cherry (Curituba ?) like your lansdale floor. Hardest wood known with some finish worn off and weathered. The plastic decking may be not stiff/rigid enough to sit on. An option to consider would be simply to spray the whole thing with Rustolium- a cheap, colorfull and easy if not eligant solution. It will last forever over the poly already applied. Its a very heavy old bench. Thank you for saving it.
That's a good idea.
