Casting a Line !

After kayaking, Alex and I spent some time together fishing in a nearby lake. Alex was SURE that I would never catch anything with my little kids rod/reel... I tried to explain that the fish have no idea what is on the other end of the line. To prove it, I agreed to use the 24" Barbie fishing combo.

I pulled in three fish and Alex... well, he got skunked. This picture is my first.

That's a pretty good sized perch. I wonder what size lunker could have been caught if, instead, you would have had on the "other end" of the line: hand made Orvis rod, top-of-the-line Shimano reel, and Roland Martin or Bill Dance pulling the crank.

My guess is that there's a 10 lb. perch/sea bass hybrid under that bridge abutment that hates any reel that is Barbie pink. He's looking up at you with those unblinking eyes and laughing inside.

So, Alex may well be right. It's not that you caught three with the Ron Popeil jobbie and Alex none; it's that you could have caught eight had you taken the "right stuff".

A fun day on the water, nonetheless.
