The 5 inches of rain took its toll in Pittstown. Leaky vent boot in a PVC stack --- all the way from roof to the first floor. Water seems to have slowly traced the pipe all the way down. Will need to hire a roof repair (warm weather required to enable careful shingle removal) and then I can work the inside. May be able to patch this mess myself.... maybe! Damage is isolated to an area of about 3 feet square. Will need to see if I feel like making an attempt to repair it. Could always try and see what I think of the results.... then hire a professional if needed. UGH!

Cieling repair doesn't look too bad. Cut back both ends with utility knife to reach the wall support beam above and wall sheetrock which helps support the cieling panel and half of the second joist.
Looks like a piece of drywall about 2 ft wide by 3 long with the beveled 2 ft edge toward the wall tucked over the vertical wall panel. Can screw in 1 by 3 firing as needed for support or to extend reach as you said.
Screws every 6 inches along all 3 joists and/or firing. Mud, tape and finish mud the perimiter and lightly sand. There is fiberglass or plast tape which may support the unscrewed sides better than paper tape would. Finally prime the whole area about 2 coats and finish paint room.
Ouch! But you had to figure it out or it would have cost you a sheetrocked wall also. This is everyones worst nightmare. On the other hand, you;re very capable and can likely fix it yourself. Maybe you can fix the roof leave too (but befroe you fix the ceiling, obviously).... good old fashioned wet tar, like you see on most old roofs, slathered liberally around the stack pipe might do the trick?
